Grounded In Gratitude

Back in New Jersey, it was common to hear someone ask for prayer because they needed help finding the right shoe color or didn't get the shift they wanted at work.

I never thought anything of it until moving out of state. Here in Ohio, complaining seems frowned upon. I get the distinct impression it's just not something "culturally acceptable, " even among nonbelievers.

Of course, folks share about whatever is causing them pain, but not in an accusing, victimized way. A distinctly higher level of gratitude is infused even as a need is expressed.

I've never witnessed so many people pass up a turn to voice a prayer request in our prayer groups. It's as if life is good. What a novel thought! Apparently, it's just not cool to complain!

This is all tongue-in-cheek, of course. The call to be grateful and contented in all situations is not a brand-new revelation.

These scripture verses come to mind:

Philippians 2:14 Do everything without complaining and without division so that you may be pure children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation in which you shine as lights in the world as you hold forth the word of life...

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in EVERYTHING, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus.

Thessalonians 5:18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Given these powerful verses in scripture, what do you think the key is to actualize gratitude in ALL circumstances?
